It is a CNS stimulat.
INDICATIONS: Treatment of excessive sleepness associated with chronic pathological conditions like narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea / hypopnoea syndrome.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity, uncontrolled moderate to severe hypertension, arrhythmia, pregnant lady and nursing mothers.
SAFETY PROFILE: BP and heat rate should be monitored in hypertensive patients. It is not recommended to the patients with a history of left ventricular hypertrophy, corpulmonale and mitral valve prolapse. Caution required to prescribe a patient with a history of phyecosis.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Heachache, abdominal pain, tachycardia, palpitation, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhoea dyspepsia, constiption, blurred vision, insomnia anxiety, dizziness, confusion, abnormal thinking.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Carbamazepine and phenobarbital may reduce the plasma level of modafinil.
DOSAGE: Narcolepsy and Obstructive sleep apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome.
The recommended daily dose is 200mg. For patients with narcolepsy and OSA/HA, modafinil should be taken as single dose in the morning.
In patients with obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome, modafinil may be added a an adjunct therapy along with the primary disease-modifying interventions like continuous positive Airway pressure (CPAP).
Doses up to 400mg per day, given as a single dose, have ben well tolerated, but there is no consistent evidence that this dose confers additional benefit beyond that of 200mg dose.
Moderate to Severe Chronic Shift Work sleep Disorder. The recommended daily dose is 200mg which should be taken as a single dose approximately 1 hour prior to the start of the work shift.
